Letter from Paul

I’m floored by the recent report from Healthcare for the Homeless that 4 million needles were exchanged in Albuquerque over the last year.  Although I appreciate HH’s efforts, the report shows us that we have an enormous drug problem in our community, and we’re barely scratching the surface in terms of providing treatment for those suffering from chemical addictions.  At Turning Point Recovery Center, we’ve decided to focus intently on abstinence-based recovery.  That means that our recovery is not for everyone, but it is for everyone that’s decided to do whatever it takes to find sobriety and keep it long term.  Recently, we’ve focused on integrating effective medication management along with our Intensive Outpatient program, and we’re excited with our initial outcomes.  We’re a strong supporter of the drug naltrexone/Vivitrol, which helps with cravings and blocks the high for opiate users.  It’s not a cure-all, but it has shown to be a powerful tool in the pursuit of long-term recovery.

2015 has been another exciting year at Turning Point Recovery Center, and the coming year presents new and unique challenges for us.  We’ve enjoyed watching our newest additions, Focused Recovery (our Medicaid facility), and our Inpatient Detox facility thrive.  We’ve spent much of the year adjusting to the new growth, which includes adding top-level professionals to all of our facilities.  We’ve also begun work on our corporate infrastructure, including preparations for credentialing with CARF, to facilitate expansion into new levels of care in the near future.  We’ve got our sights set on Residential Treatment and Sober Living facilities to better serve our community.

At Turning Point, we’re passionate about recovery, and as long as there is a need, we will do everything we can to help those who are ready to begin a life free from drugs and alcohol. ~ Paul

From the Therapist’s Chair

“Meet him where he is, not where I want him to be or even where I think he should be.”  “How do I ask a question so that she discovers her truth and moves forward on her path, not mine?”  These are just a couple of the questions I have spinning in my head while I have a client sitting across from me.  Therapists have to listen with their whole being, while simultaneously carefully considering the next question or comment that would help that client move positively forward.

We are taught to meet the client where they are at, not where we think they should be based on our values or lifestyle.  This is not a matter of us giving advice to a friend or family member, this is a profession where you have to use a combination of education, work experience and personal life wisdom to assess/understand where this person is and how I might help them move forward for themselves….not me.  That is they key…..isn’t it?….determining what they need to realize and how I get them there without just giving them the answer.  Where we as therapists run into a problem is when what the therapist thinks the client needs to realize is not really what they need to help them move forward in their life.  Or, what the therapist thinks the client needs NOW, they actually don’t need until a future time.  That is what makes this profession so fascinating; that each human that sits with you is a snowflake, no two are alike, and we have to take this one-of-a-kind snowflake and determine why it can’t fly anymore, and what it needs now to help it take flight again.

A really good therapist is like a coach, they can see the goal or result that needs to be achieved, and the incremental steps or practices that need to happen to get there.  They help you run a little faster, build more muscle and breathe deeper through the process, and the finish line or touchdown, is you, the client, understanding yourself better and being able to bend and sway with the winds of life without breaking. ~Pam Moore, MA, LMHC

Why Turning Point Recovery Center??

As we begin to formulate our New Year’s Resolutions, we are aware that our clients have options.  Providers that refer clients to us have options.  At TPRC, we are confident that we provide the best opportunity for our clients to achieve and maintain meaningful sobriety as they begin their journey in recovery.   We do this through a combination of top-level, caring staff, state-of-the-art treatment programs, and a continuing effort to expand our levels of care.

Our Team–  To provide the best, we surround ourselves with the best – we have a very dedicated professional staff with over 155 combined years of experience in the Substance Abuse industry.  Our therapists are passionate about the work that they do, and they’re specialists in alcohol and substance abuse recovery.  At TPRC, we continue to hone our treatment skills by providing cutting-edge continuing education for our staff as well as the surrounding community through CEU classes offered at our facility each month.

Our Programs-  Having a strong foundation allows us to offer the best treatment our clients deserve.  Our treatment programs are abstinence and evidenced-based.  That means that if the client is willing to do whatever it takes to get sober, we will do whatever we can to lead them to meaningful and lasting sobriety, using proven methods in therapy and medication management.

We begin by offering Detox in your choice of Inpatient or Outpatient settings.  For clients struggling with opiate addictions, we utilize The Rudolf Protocol, a proven medically-managed process that minimizes discomfort during the withdrawal period, but without the use of opioids in the detoxification process. This evidence-based detox process achieves the same or better results than other ‘opiate replacement detox’ processes, which often force the client to ‘detox from the detox’.

Alcohol detox takes place in a comfortable, home-like setting, managed by medical professionals round-the-clock.  Detox can be a difficult process for some, but our experienced staff will work diligently to keep the client as comfortable as possible, and then work to create a smooth transition to the next level of therapeutic care.  If a client is in need of RTC after completing detox, we assist in placement, and upon completion, they get back on track with us and start the IOP.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) consists of Group Therapy combined with Individual counseling.  This highly-effective treatment approach includes the 12-step model and addresses the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being of an individual. Throughout the program, we assist our clients in embracing accountability, a necessary tool in recovery.

The Aftercare Program is included free of cost for one year to clients that successfully complete our IOP Program.  This is a step-down transition that continues to support principles of sobriety and accountability, and has proven to be a crucial necessity for maintaining long-term sobriety.  Aftercare clients are also encouraged to participate in our Alumni Program, which provides regular fellowship opportunities for individuals focused on continued success in their sobriety.

Our Family Program is a crucial component of recovery, and probably one of the pieces that sets us apart from others.  Addiction is a disease.  It affects the whole family, and as such, requires the support of the entire family. Our clinical teams, with the assistance and guidance by various levels of licensed professionals, provide assistance to the families of our clients, setting them up for success as they move forward.

We are dedicated to approaching recovery from the moment the first call is made offering same-day appointments, on-site assessments, progressing our clients into Inpatient or Outpatient medically-managed Detoxification, Individual sessions, Intensive Outpatient and Family Programs and a never-ending support group, friendships and fellowship with our alumni.  This is WHY we hope YOU will continue to choose Turning Point.

“We spend January (1) walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to
be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives, not looking for flaws but for potential.”
~ Ellen Goodman
